…AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER, somehow doesn’t apply to most love stories as almost all end in tragedy, separation or death in many films. SASSI PUNNU, SOHNI MAHIWAL, SHIRI FARHAD, MIRZA SAHIBA, HEER RANJHA, LAILA MAJNU and SHAMA PARWANA ended in tragedy and some of the all time classic love stories had tragic ending as well. There’s no doubt that some bollywood love stories have had happy endings but as we celebrate VALENTINE DAY, here’re some of my favourite Bollywood movies which were love stories but ended in tragedy and yet they will always be celebrated as the GREATEST LOVE STORIES OF ALL!

  1. 1Mehboob Khan’s ANMOL GHADI (1946)… Aawaz De Kahan Hai… is still priceless after so many years and the love story of NOOR JEHAN, SURENDRA & SURAIYYA is still fresh among movie goers!

  1. 2aMehboob Khan’s ANDAZ (1948)…. Hum Aaj Kahin Dil Kho Baithe… The concept of triangular love stories started with ANDAZ and Dilip Kumar-Nargis-Raj Kapoor’s love story was certainly a path breaker!

  1. 3Guru Dutt’s KAAGAZ KE PHOOL (1959)… Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam… Kaifi Azmi’s beautiful lyrics still haunt us all and years after its dismal performance at the box office, Guru Dutt – Waheeda Rehman starrer is acknowledged as a CLASSIC!

  1. 5K. Asif’s MUGHAL-E-AZAM (1960)…. Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya… Lata Mangeshkar’s defiant singing still inspires millions around the world and Madhu Bala – Dilip Kumar starrer remains a favourite of all!

  1. 513n8IG2HbL._SY445_Raj Kapoor’s SANGAM (1964)… Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega Woh Gaana Gayega… Triangular love story of Raj Kapoor – Vijyanti Mala – Rajinder Kumar inspired many many more!

  1. 6Vijay Anand’s GUIDE (1965)…  Tere Mere Sapne… R.K.Narayan’s novel was transformed beautifully and Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman starrer remains one of the most loved tragic love story of Indian screen!

  1. 7Yash Chopra’s LAMHE (1995)… Yeh Lamhe… It was not only Yash Chopra’s but also one of India’s most controversial and bold subject in those days and yet this flop of Sri Devi – Anil Kapoor is now hailed as a classic!

  1. 8Bimal Roy’s DEV DAS (1954) & Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s DEV DAS (2000)… based on Sharat Chandra’s classic novel, DEV DAS has been filmed many times and yet this timeless classic remains a favourite of all as it was a hit in 1954 as well as in 2000!

  1. 9Yash Chopra’s VEER ZARA (1998)… Tere Liye…. This cross border love story of Shahrukh Khan & Preity Zinta, ably supported by Rani Mukherji, Manoj Bajpayee, Amitabh Bachchan & Hema Malini, is perhaps one of the very few love stories with a happy ending!

  1. 10Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BAJIRAO MASTANI (2015)…. Nazar Jo Teri Laagi, Main Diwani Ho Gayee… based on the epic love story of BAJIRAO & MASTANI, this Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Priyanka Chopra love story scored high in all departments and certainly will rank as one of India’s finest for some time!
