The Faculty of Trades and Technology at KPU offers a range of foundation and apprenticeship level programs in a mix of hands-on trades and technology disciplines. Students beginning their trades education, can work towards a certificate or citation in foundation level studies. Foundation programs include courses in basic theory, safety, using equipment and tools, reading blueprints and code, and more. Upon completion of a foundation level program, students may be eligible to receive credit for the first level of their apprenticeship and can seek employment as an active apprentice. Programs vary in length, but many can be completed in just a few months.
Individuals who are already actively working in the trades can build on their experience with in-school technical training at KPU. Apprenticeship level programs are currently offered in welding, carpentry, electrical, parts and warehousing, and more. Students can also continue their education after completing their apprenticeship and pursue their Red Seal—the industry standard of excellence in the trades in Canada—in designated Red Seal trades
The construction industry, which employs a variety of trades, has seen unprecedented growth in BC over the past decade, according to WorkBC, with employment opportunities across the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and the Thompson-Okanagan. But the benefits of a career in the trades don’t stop there. WorkBC also indicates the median salary for many trades is above the provincial average, and select careers in the trades have forecasted lower unemployment rates than the current provincial average.
The Faculty of Trades and Technology is expanding, too, with a new diploma program in mechatronics starting September 2018.
