On December 18, 2014, just after 2:00 p.m., Surrey RCMP was called to an altercation near 88th Avenue and 163rd St. after witnesses reported two men fighting.
Police found a young man, seriously injured who was later identified as 17 year old Jaylen Sandhu a local high school student. Emergency medical crews at scene and in hospital attempted to revive Jaylen however he succumbed to his injuries. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took conduct of the investigation.
IHIT has now obtained a charge of 2nd degree murder in the death of Jaylen Sandhu. The individual charged was 17 at the time of the offence and therefore cannot be named. Jaylen and the suspect were known to each other.
“What is important to note about this investigation is, the support IHIT investigators received from the family and the community of Surrey. It began with immediate phone calls to police to report the fight and continued with the number of witnesses who came forward to shed light on the circumstances that led up to this dispute. Witness development and the support of Jaylen’s family and friends was key to obtaining charge approval in this case.” Says Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, Media Relations Officer for IHIT.
“Jaylen came from a tight knit family, who are now dealing with the events of his death a second time as they hear the news of this arrest. Knowing the person allegedly responsible for Jaylen’s death is in custody may come as a relief to them; however they are still grieving and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.” Says Ashton
The alleged suspect, now 18 will appear in court in Surrey this afternoon.
