The back to school season may have just started, but for many students, they’re already looking ahead to the next step of their educational journey—post-secondary.
The benefits of post-secondary education and training have been highlighted repeatedly—higher lifetime earnings, reduced risk of unemployment and better job prospects, just to name a few. But when it comes to post-secondary studies, where do you start?
Offering students a choice of 120 different programs, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) emphasizes hands-on skills with real-world experience, in addition to traditional academics. Canada’s only polytechnic university, KPU is now celebrating 10 years as a polytechnic university, continuing to serve the evolving needs of the community with campuses in Surrey, Langley, Richmond, and Cloverdale, and a new campus opening soon in Surrey Civic Plaza.
With employment expected to continue to grow across the Lower Mainland, according to the BC Labour Market Outlook, and over 75% of jobs requiring some form of post-secondary education or training, the need for a relevant, hands-on education is clear. Many of KPU’s programs feature practicums, work experience terms, or co-operative education options, where students alternate periods of on-campus study, with paid work experience that’s relevant to their field. And the job prospects? They’re pretty good, too. According to Universities Canada—a membership organization representing post-secondary institutions across the country —over 80% of employers who were surveyed said co-op students and interns were a source of new talent and potential future employees.
