Richmond: Linda Reid, MLA for Richmond South Centre and Opposition Critic for Seniors Care, has released the following statement in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day:

“First recognized by the United Nations in 2011, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a global movement that strives to shed light on many of the abuses faced by our parents, grandparents, and loved ones  that go unrecognized far too often.

“Elder abuse can take many forms, whether it be physical or emotional trauma or being denied basic human rights such as autonomy, compassion, or respect. World Elder Abuse Day also strives to remove the stigma surrounding seniors that identifies them as ‘helpless.’

“COVID-19 has not only presented serious health risks to our seniors but it has amplified many of the challenges they face in their daily lives. Now more than ever, we must fight against this kind of stigmatization and promote better care for our seniors.

“So please take a moment today to help promote this amazing cause by using the hashtag #WEAAD2020 and reach out to the seniors in your lives and make sure they feel supported and cared for. Together, we can end elder abuse and give our seniors the quality of life they deserve.”
