Surrey: The chairman of the federal Liberal Party’s Pacific caucus has resigned.

Surrey Centre member of Parliament Randeep Sarai stepped down after taking responsibility for inviting attempted murderer Jaspal Atwal to events with the prime minister during Justin Trudeau’s recent tour of India.

In a statement, Sarai says he wants to again apologize for his role in what he calls “unfortunate events,” and says he’ll “be exercising better judgment” in future.

Atwal, convicted of attempting to kill Indian cabinet minister Malkiat Singh Sidhu on Vancouver Island in 1986, was — at one time — a member of a Sikh separatist group that is banned in Canada and India as a terrorist organization.
