Deputy Chief Constable Mike Serr joins APD

Abbotsford: The APD is pleased to announce the arrival of Deputy Chief Constable Mike Serr who will be responsible for the Administration Division of the APD.

Mike began his policing career with the Vancouver Police Department in 1990. Prior to joining the police department, Mike attended Simon Fraser University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology. Mike continues to pursue educational opportunities having recently completed the Canadian Police College Executive Development Program, Critical Incident Command course and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and Institute for Strategic International Studies program. This international study program took him to Norway and Denmark to study ways for improving outcomes for mentally ill persons.

Over the past 25 years, Mike has worked in a variety of challenging sections in the Vancouver Police Department.   Some of his assignments included Strike Force, the Organized Crime Agency, Major Crime Section, Integrated Gang Task Force, and the BC Municipal Undercover Program. Mike was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in 2009, and worked in Patrol District 2 which includes the Downtown Eastside, the Executive Office, and the Professional Standards Section. In 2011 he was promoted to the rank of Inspector and remained in the Professional Standards Section. In 2013, Mike was assigned to the Organized Crime Section.

Mike is active nationally in committee work and currently is the chairperson on the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Drug Abuse Committee and co-chair on the National Working Group on Undercover Operations. He was also on the Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Tier Committee and the Major City Chiefs Intelligence Commanders Group.

Mike is the recipient of Chief Constable Commendations from both the Vancouver and Abbotsford Police Departments. He is also the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Meritorious Service Award.

Mike has been married to his wife of 24 years, Kirsten, with whom he has two children.
