Panghali has been convicted of killing his wife and sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 15 years.

Three years ago he was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing his wife, Manjit, and then burning her body. She was four months pregnant in October 2006 with her second child when she was killed. Manjit disappeared on her way to a yoga class in October 2006 and Mukhtiar was seen making tearful plea at a news conference asking for tips that might lead to a killer. He was willing to plead guilty to manslaughter but he was sentenced to life prison with no chance of parole for 15 years for strangling his wife leaving her burned body on a beach along Deltaport Way.
