Tumbler Ridge: A massive wildfire southeast of Tumbler Ridge continues to tear eastward toward the Alberta boundary and officials say it has now eaten through 50-square hectares of woodland.

The Red Deer Creek fire remains uncontained and has reached the edge of two oil and gas camps evacuated on Monday — one day after lightning sparked the blaze.

So far, there’s no word of any damage and a specialized crew has been sent in to protect the camps.

The Wildfire Management Branch warns strong winds and hot, humid conditions mean there’s little chance of building guards around the inferno any time soon.
