IHIT takes conduct of investigation suspecting deliberate act

Abbotsford:  On Friday July 11th at the 2200 block of McKenzie Road of Abbotsford a pedestrian struck by a vehicle and the driver had fled the scene. Police arrived on scene and located a 41 year old male Dwayne McCormick suffering from serious injuries to his body as a result of the impact.

On July 12th Mario Richard Delellis was arrested by Abbotsford Police Department and charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, Fail to Remain at Scene of Accident, and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm. On July 13th the injured Dwayne McCormick succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment at hospital.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken conduct of the case.

This investigation remains dynamic in nature and as more information is gleaned by investigators it will dictate the direction and flow of the investigation. IHIT said that there is evidence to suggest this Hit and Run may have been a deliberate act; therefore, as of July 15, 2014, IHIT has taken the lead and are currently looking at homicide related charges.

“The investigation to date suggests that this incident stemmed from an argument between the suspect and a resident in the area.  The victim, who also resides in the area, became engaged in this argument which precipitated his injuries and ultimately his death,” says Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

Moving forward in this potential homicide investigation IHIT has liaised with Crown Counsel regarding the initial 4 charges.  As of July 16, 2014, these charges were stayed by Crown Counsel.  IHIT will continue to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses.  Once the evidence gathering stage has been exhausted we will be better able to assess whether or not charges will be forthcoming.

IHIT is asking anyone with information, who have not already spoken with police, to come forward and call the IHIT tipline 1-877-551-4448.
