Fiji 1Suva: Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed – Khaiyum says there has been little progress on improving relations with Australia.

“All this supposedly overtures being made about how we are best mates again, but then again alot of these fundamental issues need to be addressed…we still have travel bans.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says this will be one of the main issues that he will be discussing with Australian Foreign minister, Julie Bishop when she visits Fiji later this week. The relationship between two neighbors went icy in 2006 and in Nov 2009 Fiji ordered the diplomatic envoys of Australia to leave Fiji within 24 hours. The expulsion of the diplomats followed accusations by leader of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama that Australia and New Zealand were interfering in Fiji’s internal affairs and “wage a negative campaign against the government and people of Fiji”.
