Don’t let your vehicle be the place thieves do their Christmas shopping!

North Vancouver RCMP are encouraging motorists to not leave their Christmas shopping out in the open of their vehicle. The contents of your vehicle can prove to be a target for opportunistic thieves, particularly at this time of year when festive shoppers are distracted by the busyness of the season.

From previous years’ theft complaints, police have seen common practices that over the next few weeks will put Christmas shopping at risk if left visible in the car. This includes taking presents back to the car in between shops to reduce the amount they have to carry, taking presents to the car (and leaving them there) before heading out to dinner or other events, or just simply keeping presents hidden in the car when they get home.

Tips for keeping your shopping safe this Christmas:

  • Keep shopping bags covered and locked in the car trunk or out of plain view– they could be tempting for opportunistic thieves if left visible.
  • Don’t make it easy for thieves – be sure to fully close all windows and always lock the vehicle, even if you’re just away from your vehicle for a few minutes.
  • Don’t leave expensive electronic items out in view – make sure cellphones, tablets or satnavs are safely locked away or removed from the vehicle.
  • Remember – if it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind (for the thief!).
