WETASKIWIN, Alberta: A central Alberta Mountie found guilty of using excessive force during an arrest has been sentenced to two months in jail. RCMP Const. Ron Lavallee was convicted last May of assault causing bodily harm over a confrontation in December 2011.
Lavallee, who is assigned to the Maskwacis (MUSK’-wuh-cheez) detachment, is a seven-year veteran with the Mounties.
Lavallee, who is currently assigned to administrative duties, was also sentenced to two years probation and a 10-year firearms ban.
Sgt. Jose Valiquette, an RCMP spokeswoman, says a criminal conviction does not automatically mean that a Mountie is discharged or suspended from the force.
She says RCMP are reviewing Lavallee’s sentence and conducting an internal disciplinary review of his conduct.
“If there is a sentence which is custodial in nature as in this case the RCMP Act allows the RCMP to have the option to seek the discharge of a member,” she said Friday.
“There is an ongoing formal discipline process underway.” (CKGY, The Canadian Press)
