Ever since Salman Khan was quoted as feeling like ‘Raped Woman’ after grueling long shoots during the making of Yash Chopra’s Sultan, there has been an uproar all over India and yet, Salman Khan has chosen to remain silent. The National Commission of Women has summoned Salman Khan and asked to tender an apology within seven days but Salman has yet to respond and amidst all this, the press is baffled because Bollywood has been absolutely silent.

Apart from Anurag Kashyap and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, promoting their upcoming film Raman Raghav, cautiously dismissing Salman’s statement and hoping that he’ll apologize, the film fraternity is yet to issue a statement against one of their own. In fact, producer-director Subhash Ghai and actress Puja Bedi came out in support of Salman and defended him by saying that he has been misquoted as the rest of film industry avoided press and silently snugged out

to Madrid, Spain for IIFA 2016. Amidst all the gloom, three brave ladies in singer Sonal Mahapatra, actress Renuka Shahane (Salman’s Bhabhi in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun) and actress Kangana Ranaut were male enough to speak out against Salman’s insensitive comment and asked him to apologise. Sonal was brave enough to ask Salman to ‘Be Human’ as she was trolled by his ‘Fan Army’ on twitter but stood her ground as journalist Raja Sen too joined the twitteratti and announced to boycott Salman.

salman-khanThere’s twist in all this as Salman’s father Salim Khan tweeted that his son didn’t mean anything and apologized on his behalf while his brother Arbaaz Khan defended his brother saying that he has been misquoted but Salman still remained silent as he avoided press before boarding a plane for Madrid, Spain to join the rest of Bollywood fraternity for IIFA 2016. Meanwhile, social activist Rafat Jamal has filed a case for ‘disrespect to rape victims’ against Salman in Kanpur, UP, while lawyer Manoj Dixit filed it in Lucknow, UP.

While Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan, the close friends of Salman, have yet to say anything, the BJP has demanded an apology and asked him to be human enough to ‘Be Human’. Salman is no stranger to controversy as many cases against him are still pending in courts but what surprises most is the inaction of Bollywood in criticizing one of their own over his insensitive comments and then brazen enough to dismiss all protests and arrogantly stay silent. Going to press, Salman Khan has yet to respond and I sincerely hope that he’ll apologize for his family sake, fans sake and more than anything, for WOMEN sake!

Thousands attend Qawwal Amjad Sabri funeral

amzadAmidst outpouring of grief and sadness after Qawwal Amjad Sabri, the son of Ghulam Fareed Sabri and nephew of Maqbool Ahmed Sabri of famous Qawwal duo of Sabri Brothers, was gunned down in a hail of bullets in the busy streets of Karachi, Pakistan on Wednesday, June 22. His funeral was attended by thousands as questions are being raised over the law and order situation in Karachi and denial of police protection even after Amjad Sabri had requested it. From politicians to artists, everyone in Pakistan is deeply moved by the killing which has already been claimed by a faction of Taliban as Amjad Sabri was highly regarded by all artists and politicians around the world. The Bollywood fraternity also condemned this brazen killing as 45 year old Amjad Sabri leaves behind his wife and two young daughters. I remember emceeing an event at Surrey’s Bollywood Banquet Hall in 2012 which was organised by Pakistan Canada Association and Amjad Sabri and Party regaled the audiences with some very popular qawalis. Alas, Amjad Sabri is gone but his memory will live on as artists and the general populace grieve in unison over this senseless killing. RIP Amjad Sabri Ji!

Fatwa issued against Jimmy Shergill

jimmyEver since the trailer of 24 FPS Film Production’s Shorgul came out, the film has been embroiled in one controversy or another and the latest is that Khamman Peer Baba Committee has issued a Fatwa against Jimmy Shergill for being insesnsitive to religious minority. As per the Fatwa, Jimmy Shergill has been barred from shooting in Uttar Pradesh and the film would not be allowed to screen in Muzzafarnagar and other parts of UP as Shorgul touches the 2013 Muzzaffarnagar riots. As per the producers, Shorgul is based on intolerance after Godhra , Babri Masjid and Muzzaffarnagar riots and based on realities and plan to discuss the latest censuring with Akhilesh Yadav , the Chief Minister of UP. Meanwhile, a PIL was filed by VHP leader Milan Som at Allahabad High Court in Lucknow against the screening as there’s lot of SHORGUL for the release of Shorgul in intolerant India! Asian Journal will keep you updated about the status of Shorgul!

Udta Punjab flies high at the box-office

udta punjabThe CBFC did just the opposite as Anurag Kashyap’s Udta Punjab became the talk of everyone around the world and benefitted by making over Rs.50 Crores at the box-office as the proposed cuts backfired after the High Court ruling and the cast and crew of Udta Punjab celebrated in Mumbai with a success bash. Hailed by critics as a masterpiece, the audiences were divided, however, everyone was curious to see the controversy and surely, it benefited the film as it became one the best performing films of Shahid Kapoor and Daljit Dosanjh, who perhaps came out as the winner in this tense drama about the drug abuse in Punjab. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Daljit Dosanjh’s Punjabi film Sardar Ji 2 releasing on Friday, June 24th and if the audience reaction at the premier of the film at Strawberry Cineplex Odeon on Thursday, June 23rd is taken into account then it seems Daljit Dosanjh has another winner as the film is more hilarious than Sardar Ji, which minted money at the box-office. Fresh from his duel with CBFC and still smiling after the box-office success of Udta Punjab, Anurag Kashyap is busy promoting Raghav Raman 0.2 with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal and it seems he has another winner as the film will clash with Junooniyat (Pulkit Samrat and Yami Gautam) and Jimmy Shergill and Sanjay Suri’s Shorgul this week. IIFA 2016 is on at Madrid, Spain and the overwhelming response has made the Spanish Tourist Association delightfully happy as thousands have converged at Madrid to see their popular Bollywood idols like Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Tiger Shroff, Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Shilpa Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, Diya Mirza and many more as the award night culminates on Sunday, June 26th. Talking of Sunday, don’t forget to watch the final episode of South Indian Heroines in Hindi Films at 1 PM on SMC#116 as Yaadein airs from Chettinaad Dosa King and with that, it’s time to say good bye till next week and wishing Ramzan Mubarak to all Muslim friends!
