Blasts, firing heard near Pakistan’s Karachi university

Karachi, Aug 31 (IANS) Loud explosions and gun fire erupted near a private university here on Monday night, a media report said.

Initial reports suggest that heavy contingents of police and paramilitary Rangers have reached at the site and surrounded the university.

Sibtain Naqvi, the Public Relation Officer of Habib University, however, has said that the incident took place outside the university and denied reports of any suspected terrorists being present inside the premises of the university.

Naqvi said that no students were present in the university at the time of the incident, which he said took place about half-km away from the educational institution.

Meanwhile, a top police official said that a mortar landed in the tennis court of the university, a claim denied by the Habib University.
