The new 2015 Lexus RC F coupe joins the exotic LFA supercar and the IS F sedan as a new addition to the Lexus high performance lineup. And I have to say, the compact, rear-wheel drive four-seater RC F does look pretty phenomenal with its dramatic aggressive styling. The RC F is all bulging muscles, flared arches, scoops, wings and shiny pointy bits that scream “I’m fast!’ to all and sundry. There are such exotic touches as the actively deploying rear carbon spoiler, carbon-fiber roof panel, full width mesh grille and four exhaust tips. Best of all is a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine that pushes out an astonishing 467 horsepower. Transmission is via an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, sending power to the rear wheels. Add a sporty, luxurious cabin, performance sport-tuned suspension, an available torque-vectoring rear differential (TVD) and this car mean serious business.
Our 2015 RC F tester came in a special Lexus premium color, namely a shimmering Ultrasonic blue Mica paint and featured the Performance package, priced at a hefty $7,400; which includes:19 inch forged aluminum wheels, carbon-fiber roof, carbon fibre active rear spoiler, as well as a torque-vectoring differential, (TVD). The Premium package includes: heated and ventilated front seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, automatic wipers, auto-dimming side mirrors and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The adaptive cruise control option features a collision mitigation system that can initiate braking automatically if a frontal impact is about to occur.
The interior up front is snug and sporty with an attractive multi- level hi-tech dash and center console. A central 7-inch display show navigation and other functions and is bright and clear. Trim and finish is superb with high-quality materials. The low slung sports bucket seats are well padded with high bolsters and are idea for sporty driving. The rear cabin is tight in proportions, much more suited to kids, although it is well- finished. The RC F’s trunk provides 10.1 cubic feet of capacity. Note the rear seat does not fold down due to a design requirement.
On the road, despite its low slung looks, big wheels and tires; the RC F is not the harsh, back punishing ride it looks like. The sports suspension means it can hold its own in the twisties, but still offers a decent enough ride comfort without compromising handling. The RC F tracks fast and attacks corner very well with no body roll and offers super sharp, pin point steering. The 2015 Lexus RC F’s V8 is an impressive piece of engineering in its own right. Responsive, free-revving with a delicious V8 grumble and roar when the RC F’s exhaust opens up, it is intoxicating to really wind this car up on the open highway. The normally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 churns out an unbelievable 467hp in this compact coupe and has a redline of 7,300 rpm allowing the RC F to accelerates to 100 kilometres an hour in a scant 4.5 seconds with a top speed of an electronically-limited top speed of 270 km/h. The eight-speed automatic features a manual mode and delivers fast and precise up and rev-matched downshifts are impressively quick. The RC F’s performance can further be enhanced by tweaking the car’s Drive Mode Select, which can loosen or tighten such parameters as throttle response and shift points. The (optional) Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), is a nifty tool that allows performance minded drivers to fine tune the RC F using Standard, Slalom and Track settings for its transmission distribution settings. The Eco, Sport S and Sport S+ Drive Mode Select option, meanwhile, allows drivers to choose tight, buttoned up race car ride dynamics, or looser, dramatic drift style cornering abilities for fuller driving experiences. With all this technology available to enhance visceral driving pleasure, the rear wheel RC F is a real driver’s car. Various safety aids will help reign in exuberant drivers, but with 467hp available in a slip of a car it’s perhaps a good precaution!
To sum up the new Lexus RC F is a dramatic entry to the high performance luxury sports coupe market and should do very well, I think with it race-car looks and superb performance. It is exotic, expensive and will be rare. What more can you ask for?
