ST. JOHN’S, N.L.: An RCMP detachment was evacuated today after a fisherman in Harbour Grace, N.L., brought in a large military shell that got caught in his fishing gear.

The Mounties say there is no known danger to the community but officers in the detachment had no expertise to determine its potential safety threat.

As a precaution, the detachment was evacuated and a perimeter established around the building.

It says the Defence Department and an RCMP explosive disposal unit are involved in the investigation.

The shell weighs an estimated 27 kilograms and was brought into the detachment at about 1:30 p.m.

Police say roads near the detachment could also be closed as a precaution until they are certain the shell is harmless.
